Jesus Name Baptism
This lesson is a study of the Bible doctrine of baptism.
We will address the questions of: How are we to be baptized?, In what Name am I to be baptized? Is infant baptism scriptural? And, What is the purpose of baptism?
Baptism is for the remission of sins.
Luke 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Remission: Release, as from debt or obligation.
Remit: To cancel a penalty, to pardon or forgive, to restore to original condition.
Baptism washes away our sins.
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
A. Here we see Paul was commanded by Ananias to be baptized.
B. B. Baptism washes away our sins.
C. Baptism is necessary in order to be saved. Mark 16:16, 1 Peter 3:21
1 Corinthians 6:1, 1 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
A. Sanctified: set apart.
B. Justified: Just as if I had not sinned.
C. Baptism is a burial.
Taking upon ourselves the "Name of Jesus Christ"
A. Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
James 2:7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
1. We are taking upon us the Name of Jesus when we are baptized in Jesus Name.
2. The Name of Jesus means, "Jehovah has become my salvation."
B. 2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
1. We become "His", and represent Him to a lost world. Represent Him well.
2. We must endeavor to allow the process of change to take place in our lives. Ro.6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof
You must be "born again"
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodernus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mothers womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
A. There is only one birth spoken of in John 3:3-5. This birth consists of two elements, "water" and "Spirit".
1. The element of water is "baptism in Jesus Name".
2. The element of the Spirit is "baptism of the Holy Spirit".
B. Notice in Acts 2:38, Peter preaches that we must repent and be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ and receive the Holy Ghost.
1. The gospel consists of death, burial and resurrection.
a. Repentance is a death. 2 Cor. 7: 10
b. Baptism is a burial. Rom. 6:3-4, Col. 2:12
c. Receiving the Holy Ghost is a resurrection. Ro.8:11
Ro.6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Baptized How?
Let the scriptures prove it.
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 8: 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: I 5 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with
tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Acts 19:1 AND it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus; and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto Johns baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
A. The word "name" is singular. What is the Name? Jesus
B. Jesus is the Father in creation, the son in redemption, and the Holy Spirit in regeneration.
C. Peter fulfilled Matt. 28:19 when he preached on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:38
Remember, Peter had the keys.
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Immersion
The word baptism comes from the Greek word "Baptismos" or "Baptizo" which means to immerse.
A. Other forms of baptism came later, and are not scriptural. Sprinkling came with the deterioration of the church. In order to be baptized correctly, one must be baptized "in the Name of Jesus" by immersion in water.
B. We do not see in the scriptures where infants were baptized.
C. One must reach the "age of accountability" before baptism. The person being baptized must understand what he/she, is doing.
Taking on the family Name
A. The Bible describes salvation as an adoption. With this view of salvation we must take on the family name. This occurs at baptism since it is part of our identification with Christ. Ga.3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
B. A boy in the Old Testament officially received his name at circumcision (Luke 1:57-63; 2:21), and baptism is our spiritual circumcision (Col. 2:11-12).
C. Eph. 3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
1. The family Name is Jesus.
Col. 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
