Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 & John 15:1-8,16
Christians should strive to obtain and maintain the "Fruit of the Spirit". Healthy relationships in all areas of life are created when the child of God is bearing fruit, "The Fruit of the Spirit". Nothing we can do will cause us to manifest these important fruit. The "Fruit of the Spirit" is just that, of "the Spirit", God's Spirit.
Matt. 7:16-20 Verse 20, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."
What a person is, is far more important than what he says.
Good Fruit / Fruit of the Spirit
Proverbs 11:30 "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise."
A. Here we see the plan of God in the life of every one of us.
1. God created the fruit tree to produce fruit after it's own kind, whose seed is in itself, or in the fruit.
Gen. 1:11 & 12 "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. (12) And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
2. The primary function of the tree is to reproduce itself; the secondary function is fruit bearing.
3. What is interesting is that when you possess the fruit, you also possess the seed.
4. This is why Solomon said, "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise." Proverbs 11:30
Every living creature has within itself the abilities of growth, healing, and reprodution.
THE FRUIT of the SPIRIT
LOVE
God's love is greater, higher, and deeper than human love could ever achieve.
Agape = Love; love that is spiritual, not sexual.
A. As a Christian, we must strive to experience God's love while seeking to share the "love of Christ" with others.
B. In a sense, divine love defies description. There is no description that adequately describes the love of God. God's love was expressed in human form.
I John 4:8 "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
JOY
Gladness; a condition or feeling of great pleasure or happiness; delight.
A. John 15:11 "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full."
B. Psalm 16:11 "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."
C . Isa. 12:3 "Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation."
D. Joy is a spiritual fruit, not a product of circumstances. If we fail to live a Spirit-filled life, we deny the Holy Spirit full control. Life's circumstances tend to grind us into despair and defeat.
E. How do we get joy? Seek God with all your heart and allow Him full control.
PEACE
Calm; quiet; tranquility. An undisturbed state of mind; absence of mental conflict; serenity.
A. Isa. 26:3 "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee;
because he trusteth in thee."
B. Romans 14:17 "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but
righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."
C. Phil. 4:7 "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
LONG-SUFFERING
Patient endurance to bear long with frailties, injustices, and provocations of others, without murmuring or resentment.
A. II Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
B. In a nutshell, longsuffering is willingness to suffer wrongly. At times we will desire to "stand up" for ourselves, yet this may not be the best way to react, depending on the circumstances.
GENTLENESS
A disposition to be gentle, soft-spoken, kind and even-tempered.
A. James 3:17 "But wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
B. Could it be that gentleness is a taming of the human spirit through the love of God!
C. Gentleness is a form of servanthood. Gal. 5:13 "For, brethren, ye have been
called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love
serve one another."
GOODNESS
The state of being good, kind, virtuous, benevolent, and God-like in the life and conduct.
A. Goodness, one of life's simpler virtues, eludes so many; may we as Christians pursue, obtain, and manifest it in our lives.
B. Matt. 5:44 "But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and
persecute you;"
Ro. 12:21 "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
FAITH
Unquestioning belief, complete trust, confidence, or reliance.
MEEKNESS
The disposition to be gentle, kind, even-balanced in temper and passions. Meekness is
not weakness.
A. Col. 3:12 "Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of
mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;"
B. The meek person will be patient, mild, not inclined to anger or resentment.
TEMPERANCE
The temperate person is self-controlled and a person of moderation. The temperate use
self-restraint in conduct, expressions, and are moderate in lifestyles.
A. Time and experience should teach us the value of temperance. Titus 2:2 "That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
B. Self-control is a subject that ought to be taught in the church, the home and the schools. People seem to have little self-control. Therefore, it seems more and more, people are less satisfied with what they have.
II Peter 1:5-10 "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; (6) And to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; (7) And to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity. (8) For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) But
he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. (10) Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:"
Eph. 5:9 "For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;"
